Bolivia has a rich cultural heritage and has many fascinating customs. The festive events that are held there bear great resemblance to the indigenous culture of the people and, more often than not, involve costumes, music and dance. Some celebrations such, as for instance, the Carnaval de Oruro tend to be the most spectacular and include breathtaking processions and events. Community religious events, like the Fiesta de la Virgen de Urkupiña involve both worship and the celebration of a community.

Festival Gran Poder

The Gran Poder Festival that is observed in the Bolivian city of La Paz, is without a doubt among the most exciting and colorful festivals in Bolivia. It is conducted in May to June in honor of El Señor del Gran Poder (The Lord of Great Power). Traditional Andean music and thousands of dancers and costumes flood the streets. It is really noteworthy that different national minorities participate in this event representing the Bolivian cultural variety.

The Day of the Dead (El Dia de los Muertos)

El Dia de los Muertos in Bolivia takes place on the 2nd of November. Families go to cemeteries to visit their loved ones who have passed on with gifts of food and mementos. It is a festive period to remember the departed and is highly characterized by a fusion of local and Christian features. Many families build altars at home to welcome the spirits of their ancestors for this special day.
