Events in Colombia

Colombia is characterized by a lively spirit and great traditions. The deals of the events of the country exhibit its rich culture and many of them are based on music, dances and regional legends. It can be the Barranquilla Carnival, one of the greatest in the world, or smaller middle town festivities but there is always something going on which is quite interesting.

Expect the streets to be filled by sound of cumbia and vallenato together with traditional clothes and colorful parades. Other cultural events that bring people closer together are the religious celebrations like Semana Santa.

Barranquilla’s Carnival

Colombia’s Carnaval de Barranquilla is among the liveliest and most picturesque occasions in the country. Every year, in the months of late February or early March, Shortly before the period of Lent, this event occurs. This festival, recognized by UNESCO, is celebrated over a period of four days in a series of activities that include, music displays, dancing and other customs that are prominent in the country’s beautiful and colorful procession, special costumes and cumbia-based beats feature. It’s a season where the entire population of the city is on the streets rejoicing the Colombian culture.

Día de las Velitas (Day of the Little Candles)

Día de las Velitas is officially celebrated on the seventh of December. This day marks the opening of the Christmas season in Colombia. The day is usually celebrated by lighting small candles and lanterns and placing them by the windows of the homes. This practice, which celebrates the ever Virgin Mary's Immaculate Conception, draws a warm glow in places such as Bogota and Medellin where several streets unite in a spectacular scene of light.
