Burning of the Devil (La Quema del Diablo)

On December 7th, Guatemalans participate in La Quema del Diablo, a custom that was introduced with the purpose of cleansing houses and destroying all evil spirits prior to the celebrations of Christmas. In this case, climatically, families have bonfires outside on the street, to which they add old things or impersonations of a devil. This hot ceremony, which is combined with passionate fireworks and other activities, is treated as a means of clearing the atmosphere and making it ready for the next year.

Semana Santa (Holy Week)

One of the most interesting traditions for the Guatemalan people is the Semana Santa. Unique processions filled with events including elaborate floats and elaborate flower and colored sawdust carpets span throughout the week before Easter. It is truly an unforgettable display of art and devotion as the whole town is animated in perfect harmony.
