Cultural Importance

The event features Pheidippides, an ancient Athenian messenger as its guiding figure. After the battle of The marathon, in 490 BC, he was told to go to Sparta to ask for military assistance. To avoid wasting precious time, he travelled alone. The historian Herodotus noted that Pheidippedes managed to make it to the place ‘on the very next day’ after leaving Athens. His journey began after covering the astonishing distance which serves as the basis of modern day Spartathlon.

Race Route and challenges

Starting from the foothills of Acropolis in Athens at 7:00 Am, Spartathlon Ultra Marathon 2025 guides runners through an intricate and arduous course. The first segment participants goes west on a course towards the Corinth Canal which is at the 80th kilometer mark. Slowly but surely, athletes run through vineyards, move across olive groves, and even climb on challenging Mount Partheion which stretches to 1200 meters and higher. This section of the course is especially difficult as it is often covered during night hours which requires a great deal of both mental and physical strength from the runners. Due to this very reason, this section of the course is considered the most grueling one.

The last segment enables participants to cross the city of Sparta and end in front of the statue of King Leonidas I. At this point, the finishers get a laurel crown and a glass of water which becomes a symbol of their magnificent achievement and goals, thus ensuring the traditions of the ancient Greeks are kept alive.

In January 2025, the Spartathlon Ultra Marathon was awarded the prestigious IAU Golden Label by the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU).
