There is plenty of both modern and traditional events in Lithuania. A number of its holidays involve rituals associated with nature, folk traditions and its seasonal rhythms. Such occasions as the summer solstice celebration known as Jonines bring bonfires, music and old rituals to the countryside. There are also quite a number of folk festivals, street performances and concerts throughout the year highlighting Lithuania’s culture.

Lithuanianese national festival Vilnius festival is one among the biggest and the most colorful occasions. At the heart of the capital of Lithuania it is devoted to classical music.

Joninės (Midsummer Festival)

Joninės, celebrated on June 23, the day associated with the summer solstice in Lithuania. This is the period when people come outside, incite bonfires while listening to music, and eating kuliškė, all in praise of the longest day of the year. The darkness is full of myth including a quest for the legendary fern flower, and it is said that whoever finds it will be blessed.

Užgavėnės (Shrove Tuesday)

Užgavėnės is a well–celebrated and fun period which takes place in Lithuania in the pre-Lent period of the year mostly in the month of February. With painted masks, folk shows and pancakes (blynai) it is rather easy to warm up. The day also includes pretend fights of the winter and spring representing an effort of civilization to push the chill away and prepare for a more refreshing atmosphere.
