Al-Balad is the downtown area of Jordan's capital city, Amman. It is also the oldest part of the city and dates back thousands of years. In 1994 there was an excavation project, during which homes and towers were uncovered, believed to have been built around 7000 BC, during the Stone Age. New archaeological excavations are ongoing in 2020. 

There are a large number of historical sites in old Amman:  Amman Citadel with the Umayyad Palace, the Hashemite Plaza with the Roman Theatre and the Odeon, and the Roman Nymphaeum.
