Devil’s Pool Swimming in Zambia
Looking for a group activity that’s equal parts major thrill, hilarious, and slightly insane? What is Devil’s Pool?
Devil’s Pool is nature’s version of an infinity pool, except instead of a sleek resort and a cocktail in hand, you’re perched on the edge of Victoria Falls, with a 108-meter (354-foot) drop just a few inches away. Sounds relaxing, right? But fear not! There’s a natural rock barrier that prevents you from plunging down like an overenthusiastic tourist gone rogue. (Though your heart rate may still argue otherwise.)
The pool is situated on the front of Livingstone’s Island in Zambia – the island was given the name after Dr David Livingstone (Scottish explorer and missionary) first viewed the Victoria Falls on the 16th of November 1865, naming it after his Queen.
His first words in amazement were “scenes so lovely must have been gazed upon by angels in their flight”
The Experience: From Nervous Laughter to Victory Roars
Your adventure starts with a boat ride to Livingstone Island, which is already a scenic masterpiece. Then, it’s a short swim through the Zambezi River (yes, with the potential to see hippos and crocs, but they’re more interested in their own business). Before you can say, “Whose idea was this?” you’ll be gripping onto the rocks of Devil’s Pool, psyching yourself up for the final plunge in.
Cue the mix of reactions—some of your friends will gracefully glide in like they’ve been training for this their whole lives, others will require gentle coaxing, and at least one person will let out a scream that could startle birds in neighbouring Botswana. And then… exhilaration! You’ll sit at the edge, water rushing around you, grinning like you just won the adventure lottery.
Why It’s Perfect for Groups
- Ultimate Icebreaker: Nothing bonds a group faster than surviving an adrenaline-pumping experience together.
- Ridiculous Photos Guaranteed: Expect a mix of triumphant poses, mildly horrified expressions, and that one person who’s still clinging to the guide for dear life.
- Bragging Rights for Life: Not everyone can say they’ve hung off the edge of Victoria Falls. This instantly makes you the most interesting person at any dinner party.
A Few Things to Know Before You Go
Devil’s Pool is only accessible during the lower water months which can vary depending on the year’s rainfall. Generally, this will be from September to January. It is important to remember that Devil’s Pool can only be accessed from the Zambian side of the Victoria Falls.
Whilst the water level may be too high for Devil’s Pool you may still be able to visit Livingstone Island and swim in the other wonderful pool, better known as Angel’s Pool. The views from the island are “once in a life time” too and the history tour very important to.
Also key to remember that Livingstone Island has a maximum capacity of 24 guests at one time so if your group are interested it is important to book this activity well in advance.
Whilst thrilling, it’s also surprisingly safe as long as you listen to your guide.
All trips to the island must be booked in advance and all trips are professionally guided. That said, if your idea of adventure is ordering extra spicy wings, this might be pushing it.
Final Thoughts: Would You Dare?
A trip to Zambia isn’t complete without experiencing the sheer thrill of Devil’s Pool or possibly Angel’s Pool but certainly visit Livingstone Island – the food and the views are just incredible. It’s the kind of adventure that turns into a legendary story, best retold with dramatic flair. So, gather your group, channel your inner thrill-seeker, and prepare for a bucket list experience that will leave you breathless (both from excitement and mild terror).
Would you take the plunge? Come experience Devil’s Pool Swimming in Zambia.
