Emirates Airbus A350 inaugural flight Edinburgh
Hold onto your bagpipes, Edinburgh—Emirates just upped the ante in the battle for the skies! On January 4, 2025, their very first Airbus A350 took to the air, flying from Dubai to Scotland with more flair than a Highland dancer at a ceilidh. This beauty isn’t just another plane; it’s a flying tech wonderland with 4K HDR screens, global Wi-Fi faster than your office internet, and fuel efficiency so good it makes Mother Nature want to high-five it. Oh, and did we mention this is just the first of 65? Because when Emirates decides to go big, they go big.

Dubbed the most fuel-efficient large widebody aircraft in commercial service, the A350 is basically the supermodel of the skies:

Scotland Gets the VIP Treatment
Edinburgh Airport rolled out the red carpet (okay, maybe just a tartan one) to welcome the A350. The route is a big deal for Emirates and Edinburgh, proving just how important Scotland is to the Dubai-based airline’s global ambitions.
Lucky passengers on the inaugural flight got the royal treatment, complete with Scottish-inspired menus—think haggis with a side of hummus—and commemorative certificates to prove they were there when this beauty first took off.
What’s Next for the A350?
The Emirates A350 isn’t just stopping in Edinburgh. Over the next few months, it’s spreading its wings to eight more destinations around the world, including:

Double Trouble to Washington DC
Starting March 29, 2025, United is doubling down on its Dublin-Washington Dulles route—going from one flight a day to two. That’s double the chance to make it to DC on time, double the free inflight snacks, and double the polite arguments over window seats.
Dreamliner Delight to Chicago
Fancy a trip to the Windy City? United’s also upgrading its Dublin-Chicago route with the sleek, state-of-the-art Boeing 787 Dreamliner. Translation: comfier seats, fancier cabins, and mood lighting that will make you feel like you’re flying straight into a rom-com set at 35,000 feet.
More Seats Than Any Other US Airline
United already flies daily from Dublin to Newark (that’s New York, for those still googling), with seasonal services from Shannon to Newark and Chicago. But come summer 2025, United will be offering more seats from Dublin than any other US airline. If the Emerald Isle’s looking a little crowded, just hop a flight to the US—there’s plenty of room for everyone.
“Over 150 Places to Go”
Karolien De Hertogh, United’s director of sales for the UK and Ireland, put it best: “For summer 2025, our customers in Ireland can benefit from seamless connectivity via our hubs in Newark, Chicago, and Washington DC to over 150 onward destinations across the Americas.” In other words, from Dublin, you can pretty much get anywhere from Miami to Montana.
Meanwhile, JetBlue Wants in Too
Not to be outdone, JetBlue is expanding its European routes faster than you can say “What about my Avios?”
- Boston to Madrid: Daily seasonal flights kick off May 22 to October 24. Ole!
- Boston to Edinburgh: Daily service runs from May 23 to October 25—giving Scottish-Americans a straight shot back to the land of tartan.
- JetBlue’s also keeping its existing routes to London Heathrow, Paris CDG, Amsterdam Schiphol, Dublin, and more from Boston and New York JFK.
More Flights, More Options, Less FOMO
Between United and JetBlue, summer 2025 is shaping up to be a golden age for transatlantic travel. Whether you’re headed to Washington to see the monuments, Madrid for tapas, or Chicago to eat your weight in deep-dish pizza, the options are endless, and the seats are ready.
